Where to find reclaimed wood for sale. Reclaimed wood is aesthetically pleasing to many, and it’s certainly environmentally friendly. It’s an ideal material for flooring, furniture, siding, stairs, fireplace mantels, and many other household projects. In this article, we’ve provided an extensive guide for where you can purchase reclaimed wood for your next home improvement or commercial project. This article includes a list of online stores selling reclaimed wood, chain stores selling reclaimed wood, and even some places where you can find reclaimed wood for free.

What Is Reclaimed Wood?

Reclaimed wood is wood that was previously used in a structure that has since been disassembled. It usually falls into the same category as distressed wood. Once reclaimed, the wood can be used for many purposes, from practical uses, such as floors and furniture, to crafty and fun do-it-yourself projects, like shelving and home decor. If you’re interested in what you can do with reclaimed wood, look no further than Pinterest — the bulletin board of the internet provides over 1,000 ideas for things to do with reclaimed wood.

Reclaimed wood is usually cheaper to use than new wood and using it is a terrific way to recycle material instead of creating an additional demand for new wood. Here we list numerous places where to buy reclaimed wood for your project.

Places to Find Reclaimed Wood for Free

Sometimes getting reclaimed wood can be as simple as being in the right place at the right time. There are some resources for reclaimed wood that do not require any monetary commitment. Here are some free methods for obtaining reclaimed wood — try your luck!

Small Businesses

Sometimes, smaller businesses just do not have the processes in place to profit off their wood scraps or pallets. Their discarded wood can be the perfect solution for smaller do-it-yourself projects or arts and crafts. Check with small store owners to see if you can rummage through their trash to find some wooden treasures.

Neighbors

Take a walk in your neighborhood and see who has been remodeling their house. Neighbors will sometimes leave pallets or old pieces of wood on their sidewalks or front lawns for garbage pickup. If you are there before the garbage man, you are in luck!

New Construction

Stay on top of new developments in your area and possibly score some reclaimed wood at the same time. Construction crews may be happy to have someone relieve them of old wood they may have otherwise needed to pay to have removed.

Old Barns or Mills

Dilapidated old barns or mills could be a gold mine of reclaimed wood. Be sure to find out who owns the barn or mill and get in touch with the owners to get permission before you take anything!

Old Railroad Lines

Specifically, those old wooden railroad ties. Around the turn of this century, wooden ties were removed in favor of the superior concrete ties. These old wooden ties were often stacked up on a farmers land for him to worry about. As a result, you can often get these free or cheap. The alternative is them being farmed around until eventually burned. And once you get them, bookmark this page so you can know how to cut them to size.

Chain Stores That Have Reclaimed Wood for Sale

Many local stores sell reclaimed wood, and a simple Google search for “where to buy reclaimed wood [your town here]” can direct you to the nearest store. If you don’t have any luck finding a nearby local store, or if you prefer to go to a store you know and trust, there are some nationwide chains that sell wood and lumber products. Chain stores specialize in bulk production, and therefore their offerings may not be as authentic as what you would find at a specialty store. Many of the items listed as “reclaimed” wood are just distressed wood, which have the appearance of being rustic or vintage without actually having been recycled from a previous structure — but if it’s just the aesthetic you’re after, these are also a viable option. The following large stores have wood and lumber available for purchase.
