Short Answer

You can buy stamps directly from your local Post Office or USPS Self-Service Kiosk. You can also find them at authorized stamp vendors, such as your local bank, convenience stores like 7-Eleven, grocery stores like Kroger, Amazon, and a variety of other places. Below, we have the list of where to buy stamps, including banks, pharmacies, grocery and retail stores, and other stamp vendors.

Places That Sell Stamps

First-Class stamps are the typical postage stamps used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). These stamps cost $0.55 each; a booklet of 20 costs $11, and a roll of 100 costs $55. Keep in mind that not all units are available at all locations (many stores only sell booklets), and the price could be higher if you purchase your stamps at a store instead of a post office.

The USPS also uses the Forever stamp, the value of which increases with the price of First-Class stamps. For example, if you purchased a Forever stamp for $0.55 in 2019 but the price in 2021 rises to $0.60 per stamp, your Forever stamp value will increase to be worth $0.60 as well. The USPS provides a comprehensive price list (including prices for stamps, priority mail, and services for bigger pieces of mail).

Comparison Table: Places That Sell Stamps

How Many Stamps Do You Need?

How many stamps you need depends on what you are mailing and how heavy it is. To send an ordinary letter one ounce or smaller, you only need one stamp ($0.55). For each additional ounce, the price increases by $0.15. Since standard stamps don’t come in increments of $0.15, you’ll typically have to add an extra stamp or pay exact change at the post office. Larger envelopes cost more — $1.00 for the first ounce.

We’ve provided a breakdown based on envelope size to help you figure out how many stamps you may need and how much you can expect to pay:

First-Class Mail Letters

  • $0.55 for the first ounce (and under) when purchased from USPS (one stamp)
  • $0.15 for each additional ounce, up to 3.5 ounces
  • Maximum dimensions of six and 1/8″ by 11 1/2″

First-Class Mail Large Envelopes

  • $1.00 for the first ounce (and under) when purchased from USPS
  • $0.15 for each additional ounce, up to 13 ounces
  • Maximum dimensions of 12″ by 15″

In most cases, if you’re sending a simple card or letter, the weight will most likely be under one ounce, and a single first-class stamp should cover you for domestic postage. Note that special rates apply for international postage.

In Summary

Whether you need several stamps for a large envelope or a single stamp for a holiday card, you can find stamps for sale at many places including ATMs, banks, convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, office stores, pharmacies, and wholesale clubs. Stores typically sell stamps in booklets of 20, and most are open on weekends. You can also buy single stamps or larger quantities and can mail your items at the U.S. Post Office or a USPS Self-Service Kiosk.

For more about buying stamps, we list the places that sell stamps and that are open on Sundays. We also have information about where to buy pre-stamped envelopes.

      Hi Alex,

Unfortunately, you cannot order stamps and have them delivered through CVS. However, you can always order your stamps directly here through the U.S. Postal Service.

  • Laura

I have seen couple of sites that says that Bank of America and TD Bank sell postage stamps but here you have said they don’t sell stamps can you please confirm it. I don’t know which one to believe.

      Hi Laura,

We get all of the information in our articles either directly from company websites or by calling company customer service representatives. At the time this article was published, neither TD Bank and Bank of America sold stamps.

      • Laura

Thank you so much for you reply.
