Where Can I Cash an Out-of-State Check?

You can cash an out-of-state check at a bank — even if you aren’t an account holder — or at a third-party check cashing location.

Banks for Account Holders and Non-Account Holders

If you have a bank account at a major bank, you can cash an out-of-state check free of charge. You can get the funds right away if have enough funds in your account to cover the check amount. If you don’t have the necessary funds, you’ll need to deposit the check and make a withdrawal from your available balance.

If you are not a bank account holder and/or the check was not drawn on a bank near you, you can visit a third-party check cashing location like Walmart to cash an out-of-state check.

All Walmart MoneyCenter locations offer check cashing services (including for out-of-state checks) with a maximum fee of $4 for checks up to $1,000. For checks greater than $1,000, the maximum fee is $8. Two-party personal checks up to $200 will incur a $6 check cashing fee.
