Short Answer

You can usually make a Walmart return after 90 days for items that fall under the store’s general return policy; however, some individual stores may not accept late returns. Instead of a refund, you may be issued store credit equal to the current sale price of the item. Only items still being sold at Walmart are eligible for returns past 90 days. You’ll need to show a photo ID to return an item that costs more than $10. For more details, see below.

What Is the Walmart Return Policy After 90 Days?

The standard Walmart return policy allows for returns of most items within 90 days of purchase. However, many Walmart store locations will issue store credit for returns made more than 90 days after purchase. However, items that do not fall under Walmart’s general 90-day return policy, such as drones or digital cameras (which must be returned within 30 days), cannot be returned past 90 days.

You can return items purchased online or in-store within 90 days of purchase with or without a receipt, as previously reported. To find out more about returning and exchanging items after 90 days, we contacted Walmart store locations in New York, Michigan, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia; we’ve detailed our findings below.

Return Requirements After 90 Days

While most of the stores we contacted said you can return or exchange an item past 90 days, some said they could not approve any returns past 90 days. Approval appears to be based on the store management’s discretion. Because we received varying responses, you may want to contact your local Walmart to find out if it will accept a return after 90 days. For those stores that do accept late returns, we detail the requirements below.

Receipt and Identification

After 90 days, store associates advise requesting a return without a receipt. If you still have the receipt, you’ll need to make the return within 90 days of purchase.[1]

To make a return without a receipt, you’ll need to show a photo ID for items over $10. One store associate in Gordonsville, VA told us that Walmart allows customers three returns without a receipt past 90 days per year. All no-receipt returns at Walmart must pass the company’s refund verification process.

Packaging Requirements

To make a return at Walmart — especially a return without a receipt — you need to have the item’s original packaging.[1] This allows store associates to scan the barcode on the packaging to verify you purchased the item from Walmart and that it is still sold at Walmart or on Walmart.com. Walmart will only accept a return if the item is still in the company’s system. Typically, the box can be opened and even slightly damaged — you just need to bring it with you.

After 90 days, the same packaging restrictions apply as under the standard return policy. While you can generally return open-box items, certain items like DVDs and air mattresses must be unopened and unused at the time of return.

Walmart Return Process and Refunds

Our overview of the Walmart return policy includes instructions for how to return in-store and online purchases at Walmart. In-store returns are available at the customer service desk — we detail Walmart’s typical in-store return hours.

If Walmart approves your late return, you will likely receive your refund in the form of store credit rather than cash or a refund to your credit card. Keep in mind that the store credit will be for the current sale price of the item, which may be less than your original purchase price.

Due to recent events, I am unable to return a telephone in person. Is it possible to return it by mail or online? The item is a VTech phone at $49.99. I purchased this item almost 90 days ago and I have the receipt. Please advise. Thank you.

Hello, E. Alba! Unfortunately, you cannot return items purchased in stores by mail. We contacted Walmart and were told that because its stores remain open, in-store purchases must still be returned to a store. Managers do have the final say on returns at Walmart, though, so you may want to contact your local store and see if it is making any arrangements for customers who cannot enter the store. Best of luck!

I bought a Reese Towpower Tow Bar and it broke. I want to get my money back but the assistant manager did not look up the receipt in the computer. So now what can I do?

Hello, Herman! Without the receipt, your item needs to pass Walmart’s return verification process to be eligible for a refund. Did it fail refund verification? If it did not fail and the assistant manager was just unwilling to attempt the return, you may want to try taking it to a different store in your area or contact Walmart’s corporate customer service department. (You do not need to return the item to the same store location where you bought it.) Best of luck!
