Short Answer

In general, Walmart accepts appliance returns within 90 days of purchase with or without the receipt, but you must return some items like air conditioners and dehumidifiers within 30 days with the receipt. You can return appliances to a Walmart store for free or mail them in if the appliance is small enough; for large appliances, you may need to use freight shipping for an additional charge. For more details on the Walmart appliance return policy, see below.

Walmart Appliance Return Policy

Walmart sells a variety of appliances in-store, and it offers an even wider range of items on its website — from large appliances like refrigerators and washing machines to countertop appliances like coffee makers, toasters, and blenders. Most large and small appliances fall under Walmart’s standard 90-day return policy, including dishwashers, slow cookers, toaster ovens, and vacuum cleaners (as previously reported). You can return these items within 90 days of purchase for virtually any reason.

Exceptions

You must return some Walmart appliances within 30 days of purchase, and you must have the original receipt or invoice to return them. Appliances that fall into this category include the following:[1]

  • Air conditioners
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Evaporative coolers
  • Generator
  • Pressure washers
  • Printers (as previously reported)

Additionally, most electronics — such as televisions and audio systems — must also be returned within 30 days.

How to Return Appliances to Walmart

To return an appliance to Walmart, you must bring the appliance, all of its accessories, and the original manufacturer’s packaging to the store during return hours. You do not need the receipt, but if you do not have it, your refund will be in the form of store credit. With the receipt as proof of purchase, you can get a full refund to your original form of payment.[2]

As mentioned above, you need to bring the appliance’s original packaging — even if the box is opened or damaged. This is especially important for non-receipted returns. The store associate will need to scan the barcode on the box to ensure the appliance was purchased from Walmart, as part of the company’s return verification process. Store managers have the ultimate say in approving or denying returns, so if you don’t have the packaging, you should contact the store to see if it may still accept the return.

If you purchased a large appliance and are unable to bring it to a store due to its size, you may be able to contact your Walmart store to arrange for free at-home pickup. We reached out to Walmart corporate customer service, and the representatives informed us that pickup is typically available. Freight shipping is also available for a fee; the price will be determined by the carrier. For more details on freight shipping, see our related research on Walmart furniture returns.

Online Appliance Returns

You should return in-store purchases to a Walmart store; online purchases shipped and sold by Walmart.com can be returned to any store or by mail. To return an appliance by mail, you can look up the order online, print the prepaid return shipping label, and send the item back with all of its accessories and original packaging within the appropriate time frame.

There may be different return policies if you purchased the item from a Walmart Marketplace seller — Walmart’s website has instructions for contacting a third-party seller directly.

Note that some items like refrigerators can only be returned in-store due to federal mail restrictions on hazardous materials.[1] If your item is eligible for “return by mail,” it will be noted in your Walmart.com order history.

More Information

Walmart only offers installation and assembly services for certain lighting products, electronics, and furniture — not appliances. If you have an issue with your purchase after having it installed, you’ll need to uninstall it yourself or contact a local installer for assistance.
