Target Eye Exam Costs

The optometrists at Target Optical centers are independent doctors who rent space inside Target stores — usually near the pharmacy. That means services, pricing, and accepted insurance types vary by location, a Target corporate customer service representative said. We contacted Target Optical centers in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, and New York to provide you with basic price ranges, commonly accepted insurance types, and a list of approved payment methods.

Cost

During our research, we found that a standard eyeglasses exam costs about $60 to $65 without insurance for adults and children ages 5 and up. Exams for contact lenses cost between $90 and $110 without insurance.

Target Optical eye exams typically include glaucoma testing, but only 50% of the locations we contacted include dilation. The dilation fee ranges from $25 to $40.

Insurance

If you have vision insurance, eye exams are sometimes covered at 100% as a preventative measure, store associates said. Other insurance companies may require a copay; amounts vary by insurance provider and your individual plan.

Payment Methods

All of the Target Optical centers we contacted accept the following payment methods:

Cash
Debit and credit cards (Discover, Mastercard, and Visa)
Flexible spending account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA) cards with a Mastercard or Visa logo

None of the locations we contacted accept checks or CareCredit. Additionally, you can’t use your Target REDcard or a Target gift card to pay for an eye exam. You may be able to use your Target REDcard or a Target gift card to pay for glasses and/or contacts; policies vary by location, so you’ll want to contact your local Target for specifics.

Hours and Availability

Target Optical centers have their own hours apart from the rest of the store. While all of the Target Optical centers we contacted said they are open seven days a week, the optometrist’s availability for appointments is often limited. One location told us the doctor is only available two days a week, and another said the doctor is only available before 1 p.m.

Most Target Optical centers take walk-ins, but, based on the doctor’s often limited availability, it would be a good idea to call ahead to make an appointment or book online.
