Many stores, including 7-Eleven, Circle K, Albertsons, Giant Eagle, CVS, Walgreens, Target, and Walmart, will give you cash back over your purchase when you pay with a debit card or check. Asking for cash back allows you to avoid ATM fees and save yourself an extra trip to the ATM or bank. Usually, it’s free to get cash back, and there’s often no minimum purchase amount. However, it is unlikely that you will be able to get cash back on most credit card transactions. Below, we list the convenience stores, grocery stores, office supply stores, pharmacies, and superstores that give cash back on checking, debit, and credit transactions.

How to Get Cash Back
When Paying With a Debit Card
Requesting cash back when making a purchase with your debit card is fairly straightforward, both at the register and at a self-checkout station. You can charge your card for both the purchase amount and cash-back amount in the same transaction. Follow these steps to get cash back with your debit card:
- Swipe or insert your card as usual.
- Select “Yes” for cash back and select the amount you want.
- If prompted, select which denomination of bills you want.
- Enter your pin and confirm your purchase. The cashier will give you your receipt and the cash back.
When Paying With a Credit Card
The steps for getting cash back with a credit card are the same as with a debit card, but few stores will allow you to get cash back on a credit card transaction. Additionally, most credit card issuers, themselves, don’t allow you to use the card to get cash back.
Typically, if you use a credit card to get cash back (at a store that allows it), the credit card company will consider it a cash advance. Cash advances are subject to high fees, and interest starts accruing on them immediately, rather than at the end of your billing period it does for regular purchases. For this reason, getting cash back with a credit card can be more expensive than just going to the ATM and paying the small fee.
Discover is the most well-known credit card issuer that allows cash back with its “cash over” program.[1] With this program, you can get fee-free cash back on purchases at participating stores the same way you would with a typical debit card. For more information on Discover’s cash-back program, see our research on getting cash back from a credit card.
If you need to get cash back using your credit card and your issuer doesn’t allow you to get cash back at the register, see our list of six ways to get cash with a credit card.
When Paying With a Personal Check
To get cash back when paying with a check, you will need to request it from the cashier directly. If you are able to get cash back in the amount you want, you should make the check out for the total price of your purchase plus the amount of the cash back. For example, if your groceries cost $40, and you want $20 cash back, write your check for $60.
Note that many stores have a lower limit for cash back from a check than from a debit card transaction, if they accept checks at all. This is due to the increased risk of fraud with check transactions. If you are specifically looking for places where you can get cash back from your personal check purchase, we list the stores that offer cash back on checks.
Cash-Back Fees and Expenses
It is usually free to get cash back, but you should keep an eye out for the following expenses or fees:
- Minimum purchase requirements
- Fees and interest from credit card issuers
- Fees for cash back — usually charged for amounts over $100, but they can be charged for any cash-back transaction, depending on the store’s policy.
Note: Sometimes, you won’t be able to complete a large cash-back transaction at the register; you may have to go to the designated customer service desk, instead.

Where to Get Cash Back
Below, we list the stores that offer cash back — mainly convenience stores, grocery stores, and superstores. Specialty retailers that sell products like clothing and home furnishings rarely offer cash back. We confirmed the details of each store’s cash-back policy by contacting several store locations and/or researching the stores’ policies as posted on their websites, and we’ve ordered the list starting with the best overall options for each category.

Gas Stations
Our previous research has the list of gas stations that offer cash back.
Stores That Give the Most Cash Back
If you’re at a store and you need more cash back than the store allows, you can usually make multiple transactions, and get cash back each time. Be aware that you can hit your credit card’s monthly limit or your debit card’s daily transaction limit when doing this.
If you need a relatively large amount of cash, instead of going through the checkout several times, see our list of stores near you that give the most cash back.
Stores That Don’t Offer Cash Back
Most grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores offer cash back during checkout. However, most clothing, home goods, and home furnishings stores don’t. We’ve checked with representatives from corporate headquarters to verify that the following stores don’t offer cash back during checkout:
- Forever 21
- H&M
- Hobby Lobby
- Pottery Barn
- RaceTrac (as previously reported)
- Restoration Hardware
- Speedway (as previously reported)
- Starbucks (cash back may be available at locations inside other stores, as previously reported)
- Wawa (as previously reported)
If you need even more cash back, we explain how to write a check for cash and get it cashed.

How about Rayles market? Do they do cashback? Thanks 😉

Does Costco offer cash back on debit cards?
Hi Anne,
I called Costco customer relations and learned that they do offer up to $60 cash back on purchases. I have updated the article to reflect this.
This is useful article. I used to get cash back at Food Lion when I was in North Carolina, but the limit was $100 (not $25) but that was 4 months ago (December 2016). May be they changed the policy after we moved out.
Hi Timmy,
Thanks so much for letting us know that you were able to receive $100 cash back at Food Lion. Food Lion consumer relations has provided us with the most recent information on their cash back policy, which includes up to $200 with a check, up to $200 with an EBT card, up to $50 with a personal check, and up to $100 for customers not making a purchase. We have updated the article to reflect these changes. Thank you!
