Stop & Shop customers can return almost anything for a refund or store credit within one month of purchase. The company’s hassle-free policy means that in most cases you don’t even need a receipt to make a return. We have more details on the Stop & Shop return policy below.

Stop & Shop Return Policy

Stop & Shop promises a hassle-free shopping experience, including refunds without a receipt — though some restrictions apply. Stop & Shop gives you one month after your purchase to make a return, associates from Stop & Shop’s corporate customer service department told us. Items can be in any condition, including open and used, but gift cards are not returnable or redeemable for cash. In rare cases, a manager must approve the return.

If the item you’re returning costs less than $20, you can return it for a full refund, with or without a receipt, according to our communications with the company. If the item cost more than $20, you can return it for a full refund with a receipt; without a receipt, you may be eligible for store credit. Stop & Shop may also offer the option to replace your product rather than get a refund.

In Summary

In most cases, you can return items to Stop & Shop with or without a receipt and receive a full refund. Refunds may be issued to your original payment method or as store credit, and Stop & Shop may also offer to replace your item. Products can be returned to Stop & Shop within one month from the original purchase date. To learn more about Stop & Shop’s store policies, see our article on Stop & Shop’s check cashing services.

I didn’t find this to be the case at all. I returned a bottle of sunscreen that I had misplaced the receipt for and the woman at the service desk was incredibly nasty to me. First, she said that non-grocery items were not returnable under any circumstances, and then that no return is accepted even with a receipt if a Stop & Shop card wasn’t used. Eventually she checked with both the MOD and the head of loss prevention who told her I should be able to get a gift card, but not before photocopying my license. Don’t think I’m shopping there anymore, at least not that location.

We’re sorry to hear that you had a negative experience, Kay! After reading your comment, we contacted Stop & Shop to see if their policy on receipts had changed since our article was published; the representatives we spoke with assured us that returns are still accepted without a receipt, whether the item is grocery or general merchandise. You may want to call Stop & Shop’s corporate customer service department to discuss your experience. You can reach them at (800) 767-7772.

Hi, I got a $100 iTunes gift card from Stop & Shop and I was wondering if I am able to exchange it for an Amazon card or at least get store credit. I have the receipt, so should I be able to exchange it?

Hello, Noah! Unfortunately, Stop & Shop generally does not allow exchanges or returns for gift cards. We have updated our article to reflect this. However, you may want to contact your local store to see whether the manager is willing to make an exchange; store managers do have some authority over returns. Best of luck!
