While many gift cards are loaded with a set amount and are no longer usable once you spend that limit, several brands sell reloadable gift cards. Reloadable gift cards allow you to add to your gift card balance either on top of or after using the original balance.
These gift cards are not the same as prepaid debit cards, which typically charge a fee to reload as well as monthly maintenance fees. For example, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express all offer prepaid debit cards and gift cards, which look similar. However, gift cards are not reloadable and can’t withdraw cash from an ATM or accept direct deposits like a prepaid debit card. There is typically up to a $6 charge to reload a prepaid card, as well as a monthly service charge.
Below, we’ve compiled a list of reloadable gift cards, including how you can reload them, along with a list of gift cards that aren’t reloadable. Note that none of the gift cards listed below charge reloading fees. To obtain this information, we contacted each retailer’s customer service department.
