Short Answer

You can return new, unused paint to Menards with the original receipt, but if it is mixed or open the return will be at the discretion of the store manager. There is a 25% restocking fee for special order mixed paint returns. Your return period may be 30 or 90 days depending on the particular item. For more information on Menards paint return policy, see below.

Menards Paint Return Policy

Menards allows the return of interior and exterior paint with the original receipt as long as it is unopened and has not been used.[1] The store manager will approve or deny open paint returns. We spoke to store associates in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, and Ohio to confirm the return policy details.

Time Limits for Returns

Most returns have a 90-day limit, but contractor paint sprayers must be returned new within 30 days.[2] The receipt will show the return window for your specific items.

Late and No Receipt Returns

If you don’t have a receipt for new, unused paint but a store associate can verify that Menards carries it, you can return it. Your refund will be a store credit in the amount of the lowest sale price of the paint.

Additionally, if you make a return after the allotted return time frame, you will receive a store credit in the original amount you paid as long as you have the receipt.

Special Considerations for Online Paint Returns

You can return most online purchases of paint to a store (at the manager’s discretion) or by mail. As with in-store returns, paint that you return by mail should be unopened and unused. Menards will deduct the cost of return shipping from your refund.[2] All other rules of the standard paint return and refund policy apply (time limits, etc).

Special Order Paint Returns

Special order mixed paint is returnable if you ordered it online and may be returnable in stores at the discretion of the store manager. The product must be unopened and unused. If Menards accepts your special order for return, there will be a 25% restocking fee.[1]

Refund Policy

Your refund will be usually in the form of your original payment — credit card, debit card, or cash. If you used a credit or debit card, it’s best to have the card on hand when making an in-store return.

If you made your purchase with a check, you may receive your refund as cash or a store credit. Menards will issue a cash refund if it has been more than six days since the receipt date and you have no outstanding checks. If it has been less than six days, you will receive a store credit.[2]
