Lowe’s Paint Recycling & Disposal Policy

Lowe’s does not have a paint recycling or paint disposal program, a corporate customer service representative said. Due to the wide range of state laws and regulations regarding paint recycling, paint disposal, and hazardous waste, Lowe’s does not take or recycle old paint. We contacted Lowe’s home improvement stores in Alaska, Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska, and South Carolina to confirm this information.

How to Dispose of Paint

Since Lowe’s doesn’t take or recycle paint, we’re providing some tips on how to properly dispose of paint by paint type.

Note: As an alternative to disposing of old paint, you may want to check with a local charitable organization to see if accepts paint donations. Places like community centers, shelters, churches, and other nonprofits might welcome your old paint for future projects.

Latex Paint Disposal

Latex paints can be taken to a recycling center for disposal or mixed with cat litter at home for safe disposal. A product sold at Lowe’s stores called Krud Kutter Waste Paint and Colorant Hardener also hardens paint for easy and safe disposal (similar to the cat litter method).

Oil-based Paint Disposal

Oil-based paints are classified as hazardous waste and should be taken to a recycling center for disposal. Your community may have regulations in place regarding the disposal of hazardous waste; it is best to contact your local Department of Public Works for paint disposal instructions.
