Short Answer: Depending on where you live and the type of key you need, you can go to an auto parts store like AutoZone or O’Reilly Auto Parts, a grocery store like Kroger or Safeway, a hardware store like Lowe’s or Menards, as well as retail stores like Walmart. While auto parts stores exclusively make car keys, grocery and retail stores will likely have a key-making kiosk that can copy various types of keys. For more about where to get keys made, see below.

Places That Make Keys

Below, we’ve compiled the list of places that make keys and have locations nationwide, but keep in mind that not all locations may offer key making services. You can call ahead to make sure your particular location can copy a key for you. Costs will vary by location and the type of key you need.

Also, note that places with KeyMe kiosks offer a lockout service; you can save a key to the kiosk and make a copy whenever you need it with just a fingerprint scan.

See the table below for the places that make each type of key, and you can scroll below for more information.

Automotive Stores

Most automotive stores come equipped with the tools to copy your car keys and program a new keypad. However, if you have a newer model of a car, you may only be able to get a copy at your dealership. Note that prices for car keys will vary by location, key type (standard ignition key, remote transponder, etc.), and the make and model of your car.

Other Places to Get Keys Made

KeyMe App

The KeyMe app lets you scan and upload a picture of your key to your phone. Then, KeyMe will mail the key directly to your house. You can do the whole thing without getting off the couch!

Download the KeyMe app for iOS or Android.

Locksmith

If none of the above options are available to you, you can always try a locksmith in your area. If you have a local locksmith, contact them and let them know that you need to have a key made or copied. Be aware though that locksmith services may cost more than key making at other stores.

Things to Keep in Mind

Before you decide where you want to get your key(s) made, consider the cost and the restrictions that some places have on the types of keys they can make.

Type of Key

Some stores will not copy a key marked “Do Not Duplicate”; see our article for more details on where you can copy a “Do Not Duplicate” key.

Not all places will copy car keys and if you have a new model of car, you may not be able to get a key copied. Some newer model cars come with keys that are only able to be copied at that car’s dealerships. If a store says that it duplicates car keys, make sure that this applies to your specific car make and model.

Cost

The price of a simple key is usually between $1.25 and $6, depending on the key type and where you get it copied. Typical key cutting prices are as follows:

  • Basic door/car key: $1.25 to $2
  • Locksmiths: $1.50 to $4.
  • Retail stores: $3 to $6.

However, the price of a more complex key — one that involves a remote sensor or another electronic device — is usually $20 to $50. Car key transponders that need to be programmed can even cost more.

Places That Don’t Make Keys

In the course of our research, we found that the following places do not offer key-making services:

  • CVS (as previously reported)
  • Harbor Freight (as previously reported)
  • Magic Mart
  • Sam’s Club
  • Target (as previously reported)
  • Walgreens

In Summary

You can get a duplicate key made at auto parts stores like AutoZone and Pep Boys, at grocery stores like Meijer and Safeway, at home improvement stores like The Home Depot, and at retail stores like Sears and Walmart. Costs and availability will vary depending on the type of key you need, and if all else fails, you can take your key to a locksmith to get a new key made.
