Short Answer

If you receive cash assistance benefits, you may be able to get cash back from your EBT card at Walmart, depending on your local store’s policy. SNAP recipients cannot get cash back on EBT purchases at Walmart. For more information on Walmart’s EBT cash back policy, see below.

Can You Get Cash Back With EBT at Walmart?

Some (but not all) EBT cardholders can get cash back from their EBT cards at Walmart. To get EBT cash back at the register, you must be a recipient of your state’s cash assistance program, sometimes known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Your local store must also allow cash back on EBT transactions.

We confirmed this information with Walmart’s corporate customer service department and multiple state benefits agencies.

Note that eligible cash assistance programs vary by state; for more information about your state’s cash assistance program and how to use your cash benefits, see our research on EBT cash back. We also have the list of surcharge-free ATMs where you can get EBT cash back.

Cash Back Restrictions

If you receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits rather than cash assistance, you cannot get cash back from your EBT card at Walmart. SNAP benefits are only valid on purchases of food (as previously reported). If you receive both food and cash assistance, you can get cash back, but only if you have a cash balance on your card. (In other words, you cannot withdraw any portion of your SNAP benefits.)

Keep in mind, as well, that your withdrawal must meet the requirements of Walmart’s general cash back policy. Walmart has a cash back limit of $100 per transaction.
