Cub Foods’ Carpet Cleaner Rental Policy

Regional grocer Cub Foods, which has approximately 80 stores across Minnesota and Illinois, rents out Rug Doctor carpet cleaners at most of its store locations. Rental fees start at $29.99 for a 24-hour rental period. Some Cub Foods are operated by franchise partners, so store policies may vary.

We contacted Cub Foods stores in both Minnesota and Illinois. All but one of the stores we contacted had Rug Doctor carpet cleaners for rent. Where available, Cub Foods offers the Rug Doctor Pro Deep Cleaner and the X3 Carpet Cleaner. Keep in mind, most locations only stock one or two machines, so you might want to call ahead to confirm availability.

On its website, Rug Doctor lists standard pricing for the Pro Deep Cleaner at $34.99 for a 24-hour rental period and $44.99 for a 48-hour rental period. The X3 Carpet Cleaner is listed at $29.99 for 24 hours and $39.99 for 48 hours. While some Cub Foods locations stick to Rug Doctor’s suggested pricing, store associates at a few locations (namely, in Northfield, Minn., and others) said you will be charged an additional 24-hour fee ($29.99 or $34.99) to rent the machine for two days.

Cubs Foods store associates said you can pay for the rental upfront with cash, a debit card, or a credit card. Only one of the locations we contacted (in Freeport, Ill.) said it requires a $20 deposit. To rent a Rug Doctor at Cub Foods, you’ll need to show a valid photo ID. Before returning the machine, you should empty the tank and wipe it down. If the machine is returned dirty, some Cubs Foods locations will charge an extra day’s fee and/or keep your deposit.

All machines must be returned in working order. Cub Foods refers damaged, destroyed, lost, or stolen incidents to Rug Doctor. A Rug Doctor corporate customer service representative said customers are responsible for all repair and replacement fees. This policy holds true for customers who pay with cash since every rental location maintains a record of your ID. Repair and replacement costs range from $300 to $700, the representative said.

Rug Doctor machines require a cleaning solution for proper use. Cub Foods sells various Rug Doctor-brand cleaning solutions for $9.99 to $23.99. You can, however, use another brand or your own solution, if you prefer. Attachment rentals for cleaning areas like stairs or furniture are available for rent and range in price from $3 to $5 each.
