Short Answer

Most credit card issuers in the U.S. offer preapproval. However, not all issuers offer preapproval by request; some only send pre-screened credit card offers by mail. An issuer may offer by-mail preapproval, online pre-qualification, or both. Some of the credit cards that allow you to request preapproval online include American Express, Bank of America, Chase, and Discover. Issuers that only preapprove by mail include Fifth Third Bank, PNC, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo. Below, we list which credit cards allow you to check for preapproval — including each issuer’s application requirements and fees — and which send pre-screened offers by mail.

What to Know About Credit Card Preapproval

Credit card preapproval allows you to find out whether you are likely to qualify for a card before submitting your application. Credit card issuers may make preapproval offers by mail or may provide pre-qualification tools on their websites. If an issuer offers preapproval by mail, you do not need to submit any information; you must instead wait and see if an offer arrives in your mailbox. For online pre-qualification, you’ll enter your personal information, such as your income level and Social Security number, to find out immediately which cards are likely to be a good fit.

Preapproval usually involves a “soft” pull of your credit, which does not impact your credit score; the company will do a “hard” pull and make a decision regarding your creditworthiness once you finalize your application.

Keep in mind that pre-qualification is not a guarantee of approval; you will still need to go through the full application process. Approval can take a few minutes or up to several weeks, depending on your qualifications and the creditor. (For the list of instant approval credit cards, see our related article.)

Additionally, be aware that submitting too many credit card applications in a short period of time can damage your credit score. Pre-qualification will not harm your score, but if you apply for multiple cards after preapproval, you will be subject to a hard pull for each application. A high number of recent, hard inquiries can decrease your credit score and impact your likelihood of approval for future applications.
