Short Answer

Gas stations do not offer credit cards for gas purchases only. However, there are gas station-branded credit cards (from BP, Shell, and more) that you can use only for fuel, convenience store purchases, and other services at that brand’s locations. Speedway, Walmart, and Kwik Trip/Kwik Star also offer fuel-only gift cards. For more information on gas station credit cards, see below.

We’ve Done the Comparing for You — Here’s What We Recommend

In the course of our research, we were unable to identify any fuel-only credit cards that work across all gas station brands. Since the credit cards on our list are station-branded and do not include the Mastercard or Visa logo, they will not work at different gas stations or stores. As such, the best option will partially depend on which gas stations are local to you.

We recommend the Shell Fuel Rewards credit card most highly because it offers up to $0.10 per gallon in rewards, plus 10% back on non-fuel purchases like snacks or coffee from the convenience store. Shell also has locations in most states, meaning you can use your card even while traveling to other parts of the country or after moving house.

Note that, as with all of the gas station credit cards for consumers that we identified, Shell Fuel Rewards does allow you to make purchases in the gas station’s convenience store. Your favorite gas station may offer fleet cards that are truly fuel-only, but these are designed for businesses, not the average consumer.

Alternatives to Gas Station Credit Cards

As an alternative to a gas station credit card, gas stations also sell their own branded gift cards. Gift cards might be a good substitute if you are looking for a gas card to give to someone else, such as your child. While the credit cards listed above allow additional users, you can more easily set a budget with a gift card.

Like the credit cards in our list, most gas station gift cards are valid for either fuel or convenience store purchases. However, a couple of brands offer gift cards that are only eligible for fuel purchases:

If you have a Sam’s Club membership, Walmart also has an Alcohol/Tobacco/Firearms/Lottery Prohibited gift card, which you can use at Sam’s Club gas stations.

You can find gas cards at the station or in the gift card section of many major retailers. Additionally, sites like Gift Card Granny, RetailMeNot, Card Cash, and Cardpool may sell gas station-brand gift cards at a discount.
