CarMax Return Policy

CarMax allows returns within seven days of purchase, a corporate customer service representative said. Cars can be returned for any reason and returns are said to be “hassle-free,” according to the CarMax website. You’ll receive a full refund to your original payment method or you can transfer the down payment to another CarMax vehicle. Once the seven days have passed, the car is no longer eligible for return, but you should be able to sell it back to CarMax and recover a portion of your initial cost.

All cars purchased from CarMax come with a 90-day or 4,000-mile Limited Warranty. CarMax also offers its optional MaxCare Extended Service Plan that provides more comprehensive coverage. The extended service plan must be purchased at the time of sale and can be paid for upfront or added to your finance agreement. For more on MaxCare, see our related article.

We contacted CarMax locations in California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Virginia to confirm this information. Employees at all of the locations said returns are allowed within seven days. To return a car to CarMax, simply bring the vehicle back to the dealership.

The CarMax return policy is similar to Carvana’s 7-Day Money Back Guarantee. AutoNation has a 5-Day, 250-Mile Money Back Guarantee on pre-owned cars.

In Summary

The CarMax return policy lets you return a car for any reason within seven days of purchase for a full refund. Or, you can decide to transfer the down payment to another CarMax vehicle. To return a car to CarMax, bring it back to the dealership and your return will be handled “hassle-free.”
