Short Answer

CareCredit is accepted at all Walmart Supercenters and Walmart Neighborhood Markets, but you can only use it for certain products and services like prescriptions, eyeglasses, and over-the-counter medicine. You cannot use CareCredit to shop at Walmart.com. Find out more about this credit card and how you can use it for health and wellness purchases at Walmart below.

Can You Use CareCredit at Walmart?

Walmart accepts CareCredit for qualifying purchases at all of its store locations, including Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets. However, you cannot use CareCredit at Walmart.com.[1]

Walmart accepts CareCredit for services and products including:[1]

  • Cold and allergy medicine
  • Dental care products
  • Essential baby products, such as diapers and formula
  • First aid products
  • Optical services at Walmart Vision Centers
  • Pet food and medication
  • Vitamins
  • Walmart Care Clinic services (only available Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas at the time of writing[2])
  • Walmart Pharmacy services

Note that while products within these categories are generally eligible for CareCredit, CareCredit does not guarantee that all brands or specific items will be eligible. It is a good idea to bring a back-up payment method when shopping with CareCredit at Walmart, just in case. If you have any trouble using your CareCredit card at Walmart, CareCredit recommends contacting its customer service department at (866) 893-7864 for assistance.

The CareCredit website also provides a list of eligible products and procedures.

How to Pay With CareCredit at Walmart

You can use CareCredit at any register in a Walmart store, not just in the health and wellness departments. If your order includes both qualifying and non-qualifying items, you can split your transaction by swiping your CareCredit card first. CareCredit will automatically apply to only the qualifying items, and you can then use a different payment method for the rest of your order.[1]

Most Walmart purchases with CareCredit don’t qualify for the card’s promotional financing offers,[3] so interest will accrue on your purchases immediately if you don’t pay off your full balance on or before the due date of your monthly payment.

Note that some Walmart vision centers owned by National Vision, Inc. do offer CareCredit promotional financing;[4] you can check with your local Walmart Vision Center for its current offers.

How Does CareCredit Work?

CareCredit is exclusively for health care expenses, and it is accepted at over 200,000 providers nationwide; the credit card allows you to compartmentalize your health spending. By extending your financing options, CareCredit can help you pay for your out-of-pocket expenses that insurance might not cover.

You can use CareCredit for yourself, your family members, and even your pets.[3] Upon credit approval, you can keep using it as long as you have available credit. No reapplication is required as long as you maintain your credit standing and credit availability.

One benefit of using CareCredit is that for many health care purchases over $200, you don’t have to pay any interest as long as you pay off your full balance by the end of the promotional period.[3] (Note: Most purchases at Walmart are excluded from this promotion.)

However, if you do not pay off your balance by the end of your promotional period, CareCredit will charge interest to your account going back to the purchase date. CareCredit often carries a high interest rate, around 26 to 27%.[3] So, before making a big purchase with your CareCredit card, make sure you will be able to pay it off in time. Otherwise, you might end up paying even more than your original purchase or procedure cost.

Having trouble getting an orthopedic doggie bed. Walmart and Petco are not accepting CareCredit. What other stores accept this card?

Hello, Kathy! Unfortunately, you cannot use CareCredit to buy a dog bed. The only pet product you can use CareCredit for at Walmart is prescription medication and, as previously reported, pet stores like Petco and PetSmart do not accept CareCredit for retail purchases. Best of luck with your purchase!

Went to buy some allergy meds & vitamins over the counter at Walmart and they declined my card, can you tell me why?

Hello, Hope! It is possible that the specific products you were trying to purchase are not eligible for CareCredit. While over-the-counter medicines and vitamins are included on the list of eligible categories, CareCredit does not guarantee that it will cover all items or brands. We have updated our article to clarify this.

CareCredit was unable to provide us with a complete list of approved brands and products, but as noted in our article, you can contact CareCredit’s customer service department at (866) 893-7864 for assistance if you’re having trouble using your card. Best of luck with your future purchases!

Can I use my CareCredit card to purchase Nutrisystem at Walmart?

    • First Quarter Finance logo
First Quarter Finance | Lindsey Desmet

Hello, Carol! You should be able to use CareCredit for Nutrisystem at Walmart. CareCredit typically covers over-the-counter weight loss supplements, including drinks, powders, pills, and bars. However, since CareCredit and Walmart representatives are unable to provide a specific list of eligible products and brands, it’s best to have a backup payment method on hand.

I received a letter informing me since I have not used my CareCredit card, my account will be closed on 9/30/19. Since last major dental procedures, I have had no dental needs BUT do want to keep my card/account open just in case. The very few places I was aware of, I had no need. As per this site I discovered other places like Walmart which we do purchase many items covered by CareCredit according to the list on this site. My question is, if I purchase some of the qualified items this month from Walmart prior to 9/30/19, will that keep my account open? For how long? Though now that I know about Walmart, I will use my care credit card more often. Waiting on your response….thank you…Daniel Garcia

Hello, Daniel! We’re glad to hear that you found our article helpful. We looked into your question regarding whether your account will stay open but, unfortunately, CareCredit was unable to provide us with any information; you will need to contact CareCredit at (866) 893-7864 and provide your account information to find out. If your account does remain open, you can keep it active by using it at least a few times per year. Now that Walmart accepts CareCredit, many cardholders choose to keep their accounts active by buying an approved item like bandages or toothpaste once per month. Best of luck!
