Short Answer

You can get copies made at office supply stores, shipping stores, grocery stores, some convenience stores, and local places like libraries and print shops. Color copies are more expensive and can cost upward of $0.50 per page, while black-and-white copies are cheaper — usually closer to $0.10 per page. There may be special rates for larger print jobs or last-minute orders. We have the list of 23 places to get copies made, as well as places that do not offer copying service.

What to Know Before You Make Copies

Before you decide where to get your copies made, consider the following:

  • You may have to pay more for a rush job. Some places are able to do a quick turnaround in the regular course of a business day. However, places may charge more for faster service.
  • If you need a bulk copy job, you need to be clear about expectations for the final product. How do you want it delivered? Should the pages be collated? Should it be stapled or bound into a booklet? Be clear about how you expect to find your copies when you pick them up. Also, ask if there are any extra charges for these delivery options and consider if you have the time and/or resources to do it yourself, if you’d prefer not to pay the fee.
  • You should have either a digital file or a clear, clean hard copy with you when you arrive to make your copies. It is important to note that whenever you make a copy of an analog document, the quality diminishes. It will diminish further if it’s a copy of a copy, and so on. It is always best to make a copy from an original or digital document if at all possible. Most machines have an option to lighten the new copy, but this can only do so much. The higher the quality of your original, the higher the quality of your copy.
  • Typically, the more copies you need, the lower the price per page will be. If you can time things to print a bulk job all at once, this could save you money (and time) in the long run.

Local Places

Besides the major businesses listed above, there may be a local option that can assist you with your copying needs. These places can be particularly helpful if your print job is small, as they will more likely be able to accommodate you.

Public Libraries

Many local libraries offer copying services. Prices will vary. To find the contact information for your nearest library, try a Google search for “[your town] library.” You can also visit this database of public libraries in the United States.

Local Print Shops

Support a local business by getting your copies made at a local print shop. Search for print shops online and request a quote for your print job. Prices and services will vary but most will be comfortable handling large and small orders.

Post Offices

Some USPS offices have coin-operated copy machines in the lobby, though no information is published on the USPS website about this service. USPS offers a list of third-party printers for direct mail on its website. The list includes Amplified Mail, GrowMail, and Click2Mail. Find a USPS office in your area.

Colleges and Universities

If you live near a college or university campus, there will likely be copy machines in the library or student union. You may have to apply for a university library card to use the facility if you are not a student or employee. There may also be a copy center on campus that will offers services like binding. A student-run copy center will typically have competitive pricing.

City Hall or Courthouse

You may be able to find a coin-operated copy machine inside City Hall or a courthouse building. In the past, some federal buildings have made copy machines available for public use, but some are getting rid of old machines as they are used less frequently.

Airports

Business centers at major airports often have copy machines. You may need to be an airline club member to access certain areas, but some are open to the public.

Hotel Business Centers

Business centers in hotels will have a copy machine for use by hotel patrons. The copier may be free for guests. If the copier is coin-operated, it may be open for more public use. You can inquire with the hotel concierge.

Making Copies Online

If you have time to account for shipping, you can order copies online. Each website will provide specific details about the price and timing of available shipping options, so when you’re placing your order be sure to check when your print job is expected to arrive. Most places will have next-day or rush delivery available for an additional fee.

    Hi R,

For all of the physical stores that offer copy-making services (office stores like Staples, FedEx, etc. and grocery stores like Fiesta Mart, Vons, etc.), we’ve provided a location finder under the “Find a store in your area” bullet point of each listing. This link will take you right to the company’s store finder so that you can find a location convenient to you. I hope this helps!
