Short Answer

U-Haul doesn’t charge a cancellation fee unless you cancel within 24 hours before your reservation. If you do cancel on short notice, there may be a fee of around $50. We outline the details of the U-Haul cancellation process below.

U-Haul Cancellation Fees and Process

U-Haul generally does not charge cancellation fees, and you can cancel your moving truck or trailer rental online or over the phone. U-Haul does request a heads-up of 24 hours or more as a courtesy; it will not charge a cancellation fee if you make your request within this time, and you’ll receive a refund.

To cancel by phone, call the customer service department at (800) 468-4285 or contact your pick-up location. We contacted U-Haul locations in New York, California, and Florida to confirm this information.

Cancellation Within 24 Hours

U-Haul may charge fees at the discretion of your pick-up location if you do not give 24-hour notice of cancellation. Fees are relatively rare since U-Haul will call you the day before your reservation to confirm it; however, if charged, these fees are usually around $50.

What If U-Haul Cancels the Reservation?

Occasionally, U-Haul may cancel your reservation without you submitting a cancellation request. This is usually done for logistical reasons (e.g., lack of inventory, no trucks available, or the specific vehicle you reserved has no satisfactory replacement).

As noted above, U-Haul will call to finalize your reservation a day in advance; if U-Haul cancels your reservation, you’ll receive a refund. Additionally, if you confirm a reservation and it becomes unavailable by your scheduled pick-up time, U-Haul will give you a refund plus a $50 “Reservation Guarantee” payment.
