PayPal is a digital payment platform that allows account holders to save bank account, debit card, and credit card information and/or keep a balance in order to shop, send money to friends and family, make charitable donations, and receive payments. While primarily known as an online payment method, you can use PayPal online or in certain stores — depending on how your account is set up. Below, we detail how and where you can use PayPal at brick-and-mortar and online stores.

Brick-and-Mortar Stores That Accept PayPal

To use PayPal in stores, you must link your PayPal account to Google Pay or Samsung Pay. (PayPal previously offered two different options for in-store payment — a “mobile number + PIN” option and a payment code in the PayPal app — but it discontinued both of those payment options in 2018.)

To use PayPal with Google Pay or Samsung Pay in a store, you must have a PayPal Cash or PayPal Cash Plus account with a bank account or debit card connected. When you use Google Pay or Samsung Pay to make a PayPal purchase, PayPal will use your Cash or Cash Plus balance. If your balance is too low to pay for the purchase, PayPal will automatically draw funds from your bank account to cover the full amount.

If your PayPal Cash or PayPal Cash Plus account is set up with Google Pay or Samsung Pay, you can shop anywhere that accepts those payment methods. Check out Google’s list of places that take Google Pay, or see our related article for the list of places that take Samsung Pay. PayPal is not currently compatible with Apple Pay.

Online Stores and Apps That Accept PayPal

Many online retailers accept PayPal as a secure alternative to entering or saving your credit or debit card information. To use PayPal for an online purchase, you will need to take the following steps:

  • Add items to your shopping cart.
  • View your cart and proceed to checkout.
  • Enter your name and shipping information.
  • Select PayPal as your payment method; this should redirect you to PayPal to log in.
  • After logging into PayPal, you may need to select a payment option, such as a linked bank account or your PayPal balance. Then, confirm the payment.
  • After you confirm the payment, PayPal will direct you back to the online store to finalize and submit your order.

You should receive order confirmations via email from both the online store and PayPal after following these steps. Below, we list the stores and apps that accept PayPal for online purchases.
