Short Answer

AutoZone offers a Limited Warranty for alternators, which allows for returns of unused alternators and replacement of installed alternators. The length of the warranty varies by part and will appear on the receipt. For more on the AutoZone alternator warranty, see below.

AutoZone Alternator Warranty

AutoZone guarantees a Limited Warranty for all parts, corporate and store customer service representatives said. The warranty period varies by item and will appear on your receipt. If the part fails during the warranty period, you can bring it to an AutoZone store for a refund or replacement. AutoZone’s warranty also covers all replacement parts for 90 days or the remaining length of the warranty, whichever is longer.

Warranty Coverage

AutoZone’s Limited Warranty excludes damage from:

  • Abuse
  • Commercial use
  • Improper installation
  • Marine use
  • Misuse
  • Off-road use
  • Other faulty parts

The warranty also does not cover installation or uninstallation fees.

AutoZone’s warranties are not transferrable; selling your vehicle will void the warranty. If you bought an alternator with a limited or lifetime warranty from a third party, AutoZone will not honor the warranty.

Warranty Period

As noted above, the warranty period varies by item. Standard alternator warranty periods are one to three years; some will extend to five years, depending on the manufacturer.

Select alternators, including Duralast alternators, come with a limited lifetime warranty. This means that as long as the alternator is installed correctly and does not have damage due to misuse or other faulty parts, the warranty will be valid for the life of the product.

Filing a Claim

To file a warranty claim, bring your failed alternator and original receipt to your nearest AutoZone store. (If you do not have your receipt, AutoZone may be able to look it up for you.) If your warranty is valid and you have not installed or used the alternator, AutoZone will provide a refund for the part.

If you have already installed and used the alternator, AutoZone will replace it with a remanufactured alternator. Remanufactured parts are those that AutoZone takes apart, cleans, fixes, and rebuilds. Once the remanufactured parts pass inspection, AutoZone can resell them. However, while remanufactured parts undergo the same testing as the original parts before they are resellable, some customers have complained about the short lifespan of remanufactured alternators.
