Walmart Credit Card Credit Score and Approval Odds

Walmart does not provide specific numbers for its credit score requirements, customer service representatives for Walmart Credit Services said. However, one representative noted that the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard is “designed for good-to-excellent credit levels.”

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard is an open-loop card, which you can use anywhere that accepts Mastercard. If you do not qualify for the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard, Capital One will automatically consider you for the Walmart Rewards Card, which you can use at Walmart, Walmart.com, and Sam’s Club.

Walmart Credit Card Requirements

As part of the approval process for Walmart’s credit cards, underwriters will need to access your credit history and stated income. As noted above, you will need good to excellent credit to qualify for the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard; Capital One considers the following to be true for an individual with good credit:

  • Has not declared bankruptcy or defaulted on a loan in the past five years
  • Has at least one credit card or loan and has not been more than 30 days late on a payment in the last five years

Capital One defines someone with excellent credit as someone who:

  • Has never declared bankruptcy or defaulted on a loan
  • Has not been more than 60 days late on any credit card, loan, or medical bill payment in the last year
  • Has at least one credit card or loan that has been active for at least three years with a credit limit above $5,000

If you do not meet these requirements, you may still qualify for the Walmart Rewards Card.

There are also some general guidelines to consider when weighing your approval odds. In general, applicants to any consumer credit card with credit scores of 720 or higher get approved 80% of the time, according to a study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Applicants whose scores fall in the 660 to 719 range are approved 60% of the time, while applicants with scores in the 620 to 659 tier typically have approval odds of less than 40%.
