Short Answer: Samsung Pay lets you make purchases at participating brick-and-mortar stores, some online stores, and through several apps using your phone or smartwatch. Places that accept Samsung Pay include gas stations like BP, Circle K, and Speedway; grocery stores like Kroger and Whole Foods; restaurants like Applebee’s and Olive Garden; and retailers like Target and Walmart. For more information on what stores accept Samsung Pay — and how to use Samsung Pay — see below.

What Is Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay allows you to save credit card, debit card, and gift card information and make secure payments at stores, on websites, and via apps. Because it uses both near-field and magnetic transmission technologies, Samsung Pay does not require retailers to upgrade their point-of-sale systems. That means you can use Samsung Pay at nearly any in-store credit card terminal — as long as the store allows it.

While most brick-and-mortar stores that accept credit cards also accept Samsung Pay, a limited number of online stores and apps accept Samsung Pay as a payment method. And, even when shopping at stores that accept Samsung Pay, it’s also a good idea to have a backup method of payment in case the card reader has trouble accepting the payment.

How to Use Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay uses near-field communication (NFC) and magnetic secure transmission (MST) technologies, both of which require you to hold your phone or smartwatch up to the credit card terminal. For NFC payments, you can tap your device on the terminal; MST payments simulate the magnetic strip on a credit card when you hold your phone against or near the terminal.

To use, open Samsung Pay, select the card you want to use, use your phone’s iris or fingerprint scanner for verification, and hold your phone up to the credit card terminal. For online or in-app purchases, you can authenticate the purchase using your iris scanner, fingerprint scanner, or PIN at checkout.

Compatible Devices

Samsung Pay is available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones: the Galaxy S6, S7, S8, S9, and S10 devices (including “+” and “e” models), as well as the Galaxy Note5, Note8, and Note9. Your cellular plan must also be with one of the following supported carriers:

  • AT&T
  • Cricket
  • Metro by T-Mobile
  • Sprint
  • T-Mobile
  • Verizon
  • U.S. Cellular

You can also use Samsung Pay with some Samsung smartwatches. The Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier have full Samsung Pay capability, while the Gear S2 Sport, Gear S2 Classic, Gear Sport, and Galaxy Watch support NFC payments.

Compatible Cards

You can use credit cards and debit cards with Samsung Pay. American Express, Mastercard, and Visa cards from more than 1,000 banks and credit unions — including Bank of America, Chase, Citi, Discover, Fifth Third Bank, PNC, and Wells Fargo — work with Samsung Pay. To begin using Samsung Pay, take a photo within the app of each compatible card you want to save.

Additionally, the app can store practically any card with a barcode, meaning you can save and use loyalty cards, membership cards, and gift cards. Some of the merchants that allow you to save their gift cards in Samsung Pay include Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, DSW, Foot Locker, GameStop, and Nordstrom.
