Short Answer

While we were unable to find any legitimate companies that outright buy ideas, there are several companies, including Colgate-Palmolive, The Hershey Company, John Deere, Mattel, New Balance, and Under Armour, that accept submissions for new product ideas and inventions. Monetary compensation is not guaranteed, but it is possible if the company decides to license your product idea. Payment is usually issued in the form of royalties based on the sales of the product. Below, you’ll find the list of companies that pay for ideas, plus information on how to submit a product idea.

The List of Companies That Buy Ideas

We were unable to find any legitimate companies that outright buy ideas — even for apps. But several well-known companies accept idea submissions from consumers for new products and innovations. While there is no guarantee that the company will pay for or license your idea, if it does, you’ll likely receive payment in the form of royalties based on the product’s sales.

Before You Submit Your Idea …

Not all companies will require that you patent your idea before you submit it, but it’s a good idea to pursue a patent to protect your work prior to sharing it with anyone else. Once you submit your idea, there is no way the company can guarantee your work will be protected since many people are often involved in the submission and development process. To start the patent filing process, go to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s website.
