Mobil Gas Quality Reviewed

The Mobil brand is owned by ExxonMobil and sells TOP TIER detergent gasoline. To review Mobil’s gas quality, we looked into its status as a TOP TIER licensed retail brand, details of its supplier, and its pricing. Based on our research, we believe Mobil gas is a good option when it comes time to fill up your tank.

Is Mobil Gas TOP TIER?

Mobil is a TOP TIER licensed retail brand in the U.S. and Canada, according to the TOP TIER website. We also confirmed its status with Mobil corporate customer service representatives.

TOP TIER gasoline contains detergent additives designed to help prolong the life of your vehicle by reducing build-up on fuel injectors and intake valves. This fuel blend contains three times the additives required by the Environmental Protection Agency. While its effectiveness will vary depending on your vehicle, driving style, and previous use of other types of fuel, AAA recommends motorists use TOP TIER as their primary fuel.

Mobil’s Supplier

Branded gas stations like Mobil typically rely on a single fuel supplier. Mobil’s supplier and parent company is ExxonMobil, which distributes Synergy fuels (Synergy Regular, Synergy Extra, Synergy Supreme+, and Synergy Diesel Efficient) from its own refineries. Synergy fuel technology is designed to produce gas that reduces engine build-up and deposits, improves your gas mileage, and prevents rust.

Mobil’s regular and diesel fuels are Synergy products, meaning that in addition to being TOP TIER, it also contains other beneficial technologies. We confirmed this information by contacting Mobil gas stations in California, Michigan, New Jersey, and Texas.

ExxonMobil conducts quality tests both at the refinery and before delivery. Mobil gas stations also have filters built into their fuel systems to ensure the quality of the gas before it enters your vehicle.

Mobil’s Pricing

The two factors that have the greatest impact on the cost of gas are crude oil prices and taxes. Mobil’s prices consider the current price of crude oil, the federal gasoline tax, and any applicable state or local taxes — among other things like octane rating.

Because state and local taxes vary significantly, the cost of Mobil gas varies by location. We checked Mobil’s prices for regular gasoline at the stations we contacted in California, Michigan, New Jersey, and Texas and compared them to BP, Chevron, Sunoco, and Valero gas stations in the same general areas. We found that Mobil’s gas prices tend to match nearby stations that also sell TOP TIER detergent gasoline. Note that TOP TIER gas prices are usually a few cents higher per gallon than standard fuel.
