Short Answer

Resizing a ring may cost anywhere from around $20 up to several hundred dollars depending on whether you are making the ring larger or smaller and whether the ring includes any complex features like engraving or inlaid stones. For more details on resizing rings, see below.

How Much Does It Cost to Resize a Ring?

Costs for resizing a ring depends on the size of the ring, the material, and the type of resizing. The cost to make a simple ring larger is approximately $40 to $95, depending on the metal. The cost to make a simple ring smaller generally range from $20 to $50.

The cost for a complex resize is approximately $50 to $200. Work on rings with features like inlaid stones may cost up even more, as the stones may need to be reset in the newly-sized ring.

To gather information about ring resizing costs, timing, and processes, we contacted several chain and independent jewelers across the U.S.

Cost Factors

You can either make a ring smaller or larger — usually by up to two sizes, though some jewelers will resize by up to four sizes. Making a ring larger always costs more than making it smaller. The reason for this is the cost of the additional metal the jeweler must use to increase the size. Thicker ring designs (such as those with wide bands) cost more to resize for the same reason.

The change in ring size also corresponds to price; the more you need to enlarge the ring, the more it will cost.

You can also opt for a simple resize or a complex resize. Complex resizing usually involves rings made of difficult-to-adjust materials or inlaid stone designs and is more expensive than a simple resize.

Can Your Ring Be Resized?

Not all rings can be easily resized. Metals such as titanium and tungsten, for example, are strong and durable — but this makes them difficult for the jeweler to manipulate. Rings made of tungsten can’t be resized. Rings made of titanium can be resized, but not all jewelers will accept the task — and those that will usually charge higher prices.

Does the original ring have a meaningful engraving on the inside? Since ring resizing is usually accomplished by modifying the size of the shank, you may lose any engraving present on the shank. Jewelers can replicate the engraving on the resized ring, but it may take more time and cost more than a simple ring resizing.

You should also note that some retail locations may place a restrictive warranty on the merchandise sold. This means if you purchase a ring from one store but have it resized by a different company or jeweler, the warranty on the ring may be void. Always double check any warranties before getting a piece of jewelry resized.

How Long Does Resizing Take?

In general, the wait time for resizing a simple ring, like a solitaire engagement ring, varies from two hours (if on-site resizing is available) to two weeks. If the ring is a complex design with inlaid stones or an intricate setting, you can expect to wait for one to four weeks for a resizing.

Metals such as platinum and rose gold require special tools and extra care to keep the metal from cracking. Rose gold and platinum rings may take extra time to resize at an additional cost.

Approximately, how much would it cost to resize a size 9,14k white gold ring, to a size 12?

      Hi Alex,

The cost to size a simple ring larger is approximately $45 to $85, depending on the metal. Since your ring is gold and you’re increasing it by three sizes, the jeweler will have to add extra gold to it and you can expect for it to probably be on the more expensive end of the spectrum.

If your ring is more complex, with inlaid stones for example, you can expect to pay up to $200 to reset the stones in the newly sized ring.

Most jewelers will give you a free quote if you bring the ring to them and let them have a look in person. Hope this helps!

    Hi,
I have an engagement ring that is fused together with my wedding band. I believe them to be about a size 5-5.5, I need a size 7. My daughter brought them to Jared’s, where she was told to make an appointment and come back. The jeweler did not show up! (After being quoted $700 to resize it, ) They also insisted that we leave it for 2 weeks (which I explained from the begin that I was NOT willing do that after reading about Zales, Kay’s, etc. being busted for swapping people’s genuine diamonds for moissanite stones, so I was ASSURED that it could/would be fine while I watched and waited. My son in law also had every intention of purchasing a $4000 plain engagement ring that same day. So their lies and ignorance cost them around $5000 that day! Can someone please give me the name/location/approximate estimate of the cost to get my ring sized? (Preferably on long island,NY) Thanks so much in

      Angela,

I’m sorry to hear you had such a negative experience with Jared’s. Unfortunately, due to the volume of comments we receive, we are not able to help with specific, individual requests. I recommend contacting one of the other jewelers mentioned in our article for a quote. I hope this helps!

Hi, I have the same, 925 silver but I need to get the size 7 to a 4 1/2- 5.. I live in a small town in south Carolina so a local jewelry company will be my first option. Do you know about the cost of this? Also would you recommend I make the drive to another store like kay’s or Zales? Thanks for any information on this.

      Sherry,

Unfortunately, due to the volume of comments we receive, we are not able to help with specific, individual requests; in other words, we aren’t able to contact your local jewelry companies to find out how much resizing your ring would cost with each of them. Therefore, we can’t advise you as to the cost of a small local jewelry company’s pricing versus a larger chain like Kay’s or Zales. I do recommend that you call a local jewelry company or two and get quotes, which you can then compare with a larger chain. I hope this helps!

I have a 925 sterling silver ring that’s a 7. I need it to be made a 9. About how much would you estimate this would cost me? Thank you!

      Hi Ruth,

Increasing a ring by two sizes or more tends to add to the price tag of the resize; for a plain 925 silver ring, it’s likely that you would pay between $40 – $60, but this can vary widely depending on the jeweler that you visit and the type of ring that you have. Rings with certain design elements cannot be altered more than one size from the original, and some cannot be resized at all, so it’s a good idea to get in touch with a professional jeweler to find out the options and applicable prices for your particular ring. I hope this helps!
