Short Answer: Walmart gift cards are non-returnable. This includes Walmart store gift cards and third-party gift cards. However, you may be able to get a refund on third-party gift cards from the individual business. For more information on the Walmart gift card return policy, see below.

Can You Return Gift Cards to Walmart?

Walmart does not allow returns on gift cards or e-gift cards, a corporate customer service representative said. This applies to its own store-brand gift cards and third-party gift cards. We contacted Walmart stores in California, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, and West Virginia to confirm this information. The Walmart gift card return policy is also outlined on its website.

There are, however, a few states that require merchants to offer the remaining balance on a gift card in cash if the balance is low. Walmart locations in the following states and territories will issue a partial cash refund for the remaining balance as each state’s law dictates:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • New Jersey
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Texas
  • Vermont
  • Washington
  • Puerto Rico

While gift cards are not returnable at Walmart, a Walmart corporate customer service representative said you may be able to get a refund on a third-party gift card by contacting the individual business. Refunds are issued at the discretion of the third-party retailer.
