BJ’s Eye Exam Cost Explained

To gather more information about the available services and costs you can expect when visiting BJ’s Optical for an eye exam, we contacted BJ’s Optical locations in Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, and Ohio. BJ’s Wholesale Club offers eye exams for glasses at all locations with BJ’s Optical eye care centers, customer service representatives told us. Exams for contact lenses are also available at most BJ’s Optical centers.

While prices at BJ’s Optical vary by location, we were told that, in general, you can expect to pay between $60 and $130 for an eye exam at BJ’s. You must have a membership to BJ’s Wholesale Club to get an exam or purchase glasses and contacts at BJ’s Optical.

BJ’s Wholesale Club previously partnered with U.S. Vision to offer eye exams, but it now owns and operates its own optical departments in cooperation with independent optometrists.

Eye Exam Costs

Glasses Exams

Routine eye exams for glasses usually cost around $60, though prices vary by store. Pupil dilation is not regularly included in the routine eyeglass exam, but you can request it for about $10 extra.^[1]

Contact Lens Exams

Contact lens exams range from around $110 to $130, with prices varying by location and by the type of contact lens you will need. Spherical soft lens exams usually cost around $110; toric and astigmatic contact lens exams cost about $120, and multifocal lens exams cost about $130.^[1]

All contact lens exams include pupil dilation, and in addition to your new contact lenses, you will receive an updated prescription for glasses.

Additional Optical Services and Products

All BJ’s Optical locations offer single-vision and progressive lenses from the BJ’s-owned brand Berkley Jensen lenses, as well as a wide assortment of eyeglass frames. Eyeglass frames are available for men, women, and children, and BJ’s also offers prescription sunglasses.

Contact lenses are not available at all BJ’s Wholesale Clubs, customer service representatives told us, but many stores do offer them (including all of the stores we spoke with). Alternatively, you can order contact lenses from BJ’s online.

When you purchase glasses or contact lenses at BJ’s Optical, your lenses and frames will be professionally fitted to your eyes and face before you complete your purchase. Keep in mind that your exam cost does not include the price of the contact lenses or eyeglasses; you will need to select and purchase these items after receiving your prescription.

Payment Methods

Insurance

BJ’s Optical accepts insurance, HMOs, and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). BJ’s Optical locations are operated by independent optometrists, so acceptable insurance will vary by location, but typically include Medicare and Medicaid plans, along with various national and regional insurance providers.^[2]

You can contact your local BJ’s Optical or use your insurance company’s care finder to be sure that BJ’s Optical is in-network before visiting. Also, be aware that you may be required to pay a copay and/or additional fees.

Direct Payment

In addition to medical benefits, BJ’s Optical accepts the following forms of payment:^[3]

Hours and Availability

You will need a BJ’s Wholesale Club membership to get an eye exam at BJ’s Optical. While BJ’s allows members to shop with guests, only card-carrying members have purchasing privileges.

None of the locations we called said that they take walk-ins, so it is best to call ahead and to schedule your appointment. Hours at BJ’s Optical vary by store, but eye care services are generally available during the following hours:

• Monday: 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Tuesday through Friday: 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Sunday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
