JCPenney accepts merchandise returns even if the tags have been removed, as long as you have the receipt — with the exception of special occasion dresses. For more details on JCPenney’s return policy, see below.

JCPenney Return Policy Without Tags?

JCPenney accepts returns on most items without the tags attached, as long as you have the receipt, a corporate customer service representative said. We contacted JCPenney stores in Colorado, Florida, Michigan, New Mexico, and Oklahoma to verify this information.

Returns at JCPenney fall into one of two categories: returns with or without a receipt. If you have the receipt, JCPenney will issue a full refund to the original payment method — even if the item no longer has the tags attached, the item has been worn, and/or the item has been washed. (Note: While you can return worn clothes, underwear returns must be in new condition.)

Without a receipt, you may be issued store credit in the amount of the lowest sale price for the item in the past 45 days. Keep in mind, JCPenney reserves the right to refuse a return without a receipt. (Wondering if JCPenney can look up your receipt in-store? See our article for details.)

An exception to the rule: special occasion dresses. Special occasion dresses must be returned in their original sale condition with the green return tag still attached, representatives said.
