Newspapers that go unsold are often collected by the distributor the next day while delivering the latest edition. These papers typically end up recycled or thrown away. However, there are a few stores that will sell the Sunday edition of the newspaper on Monday — if they have extra copies. Kroger, Speedway, and Starbucks are a few places where you may be able to buy the Sunday paper on Monday. For the list of more places, see below.

Where to Buy Sunday Paper on Monday

We called several retailers and found that newspaper distributors often pick up and dispose of unsold copies of the Sunday paper on Sunday night or before stores open on Monday morning. However, a few stores hold on to unsold copies of the Sunday paper, and you may be able to pick up a copy at one of the locations listed below.

We’ve indicated the general places to check for a Sunday paper on Monday, plus specific retailers in each category that we were able to confirm sell the Sunday paper on Mondays — when available. Keep in mind that availability will vary significantly by day and location. Local newspapers may have their own policies for handling unsold copies, and store policies may vary between locations. On top of this, some days, the retailer may simply sell out. It’s always a good idea to contact your local store for current stock and policy information before visiting.

Coffee Shops

Coffee shops regularly sell and/or have a few reading copies of local and national newspapers. You may be able to find major national newspapers like USA Today or the Wall Street Journal at large coffee franchises, but you will have the most luck finding your local Sunday paper on Monday at a locally owned coffee shop. You may even be able to make an agreement with some baristas who are willing to set aside an unused/unsold Sunday paper for you when the shop closes. The earlier you visit on Monday, the more likely it is that you will find a leftover Sunday newspaper.

In the course of our research, we found that the following national coffee shops don’t sell the Sunday paper on Monday:

  • Dunkin’ Donuts
  • Starbucks (Note: Starbucks stopped selling newspapers altogether in 2019.)
  • Tim Hortons

Dollar Stores

Dollar stores often sell daily newspapers (including the Sunday newspaper) for $1; Sunday editions typically cost $1.50 or higher at full price.

While dollar stores don’t typically sell Sunday papers on Mondays, representatives from two Dollar General stores said the distributor doesn’t typically collect unsold papers until the afternoon, meaning you may be able to get a Sunday paper on Monday morning at your local Dollar General. Dollar General stores typically open at 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. Find a Dollar General.

In the course of our research, we found that the following dollar stores don’t sell the Sunday paper on Monday:

  • Dollar Tree
  • Family Dollar

Gas Stations and Convenience Stores

Gas stations and convenience stores often sell local newspapers, metropolitan newspapers (from the nearest major city), and sometimes national newspapers. Speedway store associates told us that leftover newspapers are sometimes picked up early, but if there are still some available, Speedway will sell them the next day (usually at regular price). Most Speedway locations are open 24 hours. Find a Speedway.

In the course of our research, we found that the following gas stations and convenience stores don’t sell the Sunday paper on Monday:

  • Circle K
  • Marathon
  • 7-Eleven
  • Shell

However, since we were unable to call every location and policies often vary, you may want to contact a store directly to find out about newspaper availability.

Grocery Stores

Major grocery store chains sell newspapers daily. H-E-B sells the Sunday paper on Monday, if it has unsold copies in stock, several store associates said. All of the H-E-B stores we called on a Monday morning had Sunday papers available. Most H-E-B stores open at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m.; visiting early should give you a better chance of finding a Sunday paper. Find an H-E-B.

Kroger also sells Sunday papers on Mondays, if there are any left in stock, Kroger store associates said. And, you may be able to get the day-old paper at a discount; discounts are at the discretion of the store manager. Most Kroger grocery stores are open from 6 a.m. to midnight. Find a Kroger.

In the course of our research, we found that the following grocery stores do not sell the Sunday paper on Monday:

  • Publix
  • Safeway
  • Winn-Dixie

Newspaper Vending Boxes and Circulation Offices

Though far less common now than they once were, coin-operated newspaper vending boxes may still be worth checking if you have one nearby. Sometimes, distributors will store extra copies of older editions below the newest edition; a few bloggers and coupon forum users reported success in finding Sunday editions this way. However, be aware that if the newspaper you want isn’t in the box, there’s no way to get your money back.

Alternatively, you can contact your local newspaper’s circulation office and ask if it sells older issues. Contact information — such as an office phone number or circulation department email address — should be listed on the newspaper’s website.

Places That Do Not Sell Sunday Papers on Monday

In addition to the specific retailers listed above, we found the following stores do not sell newspapers from the previous day:

  • CVS
  • Rite Aid
  • Target
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart

In Summary

Sunday newspapers aren’t often sold on Monday, but you may be able to find a copy at select coffee shops, dollar stores, gas stations, and/or grocery stores. You can also try contacting your local newspaper’s circulation office to ask about back issues. If you haven’t had much luck finding a Sunday paper on Monday, the best way to ensure that you are able to get the paper is to buy it on Sunday, if possible, or subscribe and have it delivered to your house.
