Bank ATMs
You can cash checks at many bank ATMs. What happens is the money gets deposited into your account and then right away it’s available for you to withdraw. Technically, it’s depositing and withdrawing, and not cashing, but the outcome is the same. You must be an account holder at the bank that owns the ATM. If you do have a bank account with a major bank, this section is absolutely perfect for you. If you don’t have a bank account, you can move on to the next section of this article.

24. Walmart
Note: While some checks can be cashed at the register, which is open whenever the store is, not all registers are prepared to cash checks, in which case you’ll have to cash the check at Walmart’s MoneyCenter or Customer Service desk. The hours at the MoneyCenter and Customer Service may be shorter than regular store hours. This means that large checks usually can’t be cashed late — the register doesn’t keep a lot of cash on hand.
- Types of check cashed: Payroll, government, tax, cashier, insurance settlement, 401k/retirement checks and MoneyGram money orders that were purchased at Walmart, but Walmart does not cash handwritten checks.
- Limits: Up to $5,000. Note: While this is the policy posted on the Walmart website, multiple readers have reported that certain locations will not cash checks over $2,000, and some will not cash any government-issued checks. We recommend calling ahead to the nearest Walmart location to verify the check cashing policies at that specific store.
- Fees: $3 for checks up to and including $1,000, and $6 thereafter to the limit. If you’d rather you can have your check money loaded on to a Walmart MoneyCard (and if you do, the fees are waived)

The easiest (and almost always free) place to cash a check at odd hours is at your bank’s ATM. But, this doesn’t always work — sometimes if you deposit your check late at night, you won’t be able to withdraw your cash until the next day. It depends on your bank’s policy with respect to deposit clearing times. If you want cash now, you can cash your check at a grocery store or check-cashing store that has check-cashing services and is open all night, or at least until late. If you can get to the store before midnight, you’ll have even more options, as many grocery stores are open late (but not all night) and cash checks.

when I went to publix to try and cash a personal check, they told me that they don’t cash personal checks.

It’s almost always up to the individual store to decide whether they cash a personal check. While Publix’s website says that they will cash personal checks, your local store could have decided that it won’t. This happens because personal checks are risky for stores to cash, so depending on their location, clientele, or past bad luck with personal checks, they store might decide not to cash them.
Winco doesn’t cash hand written checks

Meijer policy is to enroll into their check cashing, which takes 7 to 10 business days to clear. Not a 24 hour payroll check cashing.

You’re absolutely right, and I’ve moved Meijer from the 24 hour check cashing store list to the late night list–thank you so much for bringing that to our attention. To confirm their policy, I called Meijer Corporate Headquarters and spoke to a representative who confirmed that customers are required to sign up for payroll check cashing at the service desk, open from 7 AM to 11 PM. Enrollment into the Meijer check cashing service requires you to bring your ID and your payroll check, and it does take about one week to process the first time that you cash a payroll check. Again, thank you for letting us know so we could provide our readers with accurate information!
Hyvee doesn’t cash checks anymore.

I was told by multiple Walmart’s in my area (South Sarasota, Florida) that they would NOT cash ANY tax return/government issued check or ANY other check that totaled $2,000.00 or more. 🙁
