Short answer: Most Green Dot prepaid cards have a withdrawal limit of $500 per day at an ATM or participating bank teller. Some Green Dot cards, such as the Walmart MoneyCard, have higher withdrawal limits at tellers or in-store financial centers. Green Dot partners with MoneyPass for ATM access, meaning you can use any MoneyPass ATM to withdraw cash with no additional fees. Below, we have more details about what Green Dot cards are, as well as how and where to use them.

What Is a Green Dot Card and Where Can You Get One?

Green Dot offers reloadable Mastercard and Visa prepaid cards. These cards are different from gift cards because they require you to verify your identity before use, and they provide additional services, such as direct deposits and ATM access.

The Green Dot card is personalized with your name, and you can use it to withdraw cash or make purchases, similar to a debit card. You may use your Green Dot card anywhere Mastercard or Visa debit cards are accepted, including gas stations, convenience stores, shopping malls, grocery stores, superstores, and online stores. If you have an Android or iOS device, you can also download the Green Dot app to check your balance, deposit checks, and more.

You can get a Green Dot card without a credit check or a bank account, which is why some people opt for them over regular debit cards. It costs $7.95 per month to keep your Green Dot card active. Sign up at GreenDot.com to order a Green Dot card, or find a Green Dot retailer near you to purchase a card in-store. Green Dot cards are commonly available at the following retail locations:

  • 7-Eleven
  • ACE Cash Express
  • CVS
  • Dollar General
  • Dollar Tree
  • Family Dollar
  • Kmart
  • Kroger
  • Rite Aid
  • Safeway
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart

What Is the Daily Green Dot ATM Withdrawal Limit?

You may withdraw up to $500 per day at an ATM or bank teller with most Green Dot cards. The limit may vary depending on the terms for your particular card, however; the Walmart MoneyCard by Green Dot, for example, follows the $500 per day ATM withdrawal limit but offers higher withdrawal limits of $1,000 per day at a Walmart register or MoneyCenter, and $1,500 per transaction at a participating bank teller.

If you would like to raise your daily ATM withdrawal limit, contact Green Dot’s customer service department at (866) 795-7597. The total daily spend limit, which includes ATM withdrawals, is $3,000.

Where Can You Find an ATM That Takes Green Dot Cards?

You can use your Green Dot card at any ATM around the world, though sometimes for a fee. You can use your card with no additional fees at MoneyPass ATMs. You can usually find MoneyPass ATMs at local banks and credit unions, as well as stores like 7-Eleven; find a MoneyPass ATM near you.

MoneyPass logo

If an ATM has a MoneyPass logo, using your Green Dot card won’t cost you anything. Just insert your Green Dot card and use it like you would any other ATM card. If you come across a non-MoneyPass ATM, you’ll be able to make cash withdrawals for a fee of $3.00 per transaction, in addition to any fees the ATM itself may carry.

Keep in mind that only personalized cards are valid for ATM use. This means that if you have a temporary Green Dot card, you’ll need to wait until you get an official card with your name on it or until your identity is verified. Your official card should arrive in the mail seven to 10 days after registering. Once you receive the card in the mail, you can activate it at Green Dot’s website.

How Do You Add Money to Your Green Dot Card?

Since the Green Dot card is prepaid, you’ll need to add money to the card in order to use it. You can reload money onto your Green Dot card using one of the following methods:

  • Direct Deposit: No fee; some cardholders are eligible to receive deposits up to four days early with ASAP Direct Deposit
  • Bank transfer: Fees vary by the bank; log in to your Green Dot account to find its account and routing numbers
  • Mobile check deposit: No fee; use the Green Dot app to deposit personal checks, preprinted business checks, and government-issued checks
  • MoneyPak: See our related article for information about where to buy MoneyPak.
  • Reload@theRegister: For a fee of about $5, you can reload your card using cash at a store; find a Reload@theRegister location near you
  • Walmart check deposit: For a fee of about $4, cash a preprinted check at a participating Walmart store and load up to $1,000 to your Green Dot card.

For more details on where to reload your card in person, see our article: Where Can I Reload My Green Dot Card? At These 10+ Stores

How Much Money Can You Have on Your Green Dot Card?

If you’re reloading your Green Dot card with cash, you can load up to $3,000 per day. The overall maximum balance for Green Dot cards is $10,000 — meaning you cannot have more than $10,000 on your account at one time, and can never deposit more than $10,000 using a non-cash reload method.

In Summary

Green Dot provides a banking alternative for those who want debit card services and ATM access without applying for a traditional bank account. It allows ATM withdrawals of up to $500 per day, and you can withdraw funds at any MoneyPass ATM for no additional fee. Higher withdrawal limits are available for some cards using an in-person teller or in-store financial center. You can add money to your Green Dot card through direct deposit, bank transfers, mobile check deposit, or at a participating Reload@theRegister store. While Green Dot cards do cost $7.95 per month, you can buy a card at many retail stores, can use it for nearly all of your daily spending needs, and will not be subject to a credit check when you apply.

      Hi Tammy,

You probably won’t be able to withdraw only $3 from your card at an ATM. While there are many free Green Dot ATMs (if you used a fee ATM, the fee would probably eat up all or most of that $3), ATMS don’t dispense $1.

      Hi Maurice,

Because Green Dot isn’t associated with a bank, you can’t withdraw money from a bank teller. There are several free Money Pass ATMs you can use in Las Vegas though.

I lost my card so I order a new one but it’s going to take 10 days, can I still get money out from a bank teller and it’s so where in Boston and what do I need? Also if that’s not it posible can I transfer money to my other green dot card from the one is on the way?

Hi, Edwin. You should still be able to withdraw cash from your bank account at one of your bank’s branches with a teller. Your bank will usually ask for a government issued ID. If you were talking about just your Green Dot card, and don’t have a bank account, you won’t be able to go to a teller. And, yes, because there is an account associated with your Green Dot card, you should be able to log in and transfer money from one card to another, even if you don’t have the physical card. Good luck, hope your new card arrives quickly!

      Olivia,

Unfortunately, due to the volume of comments we receive, we are not able to help with specific, individual requests. If you’re looking for a bank in El Paso, I recommend conducting a Google search to determine which bank is closest to you and meets your needs. I hope this helps!

Can I withdraw money after midnight even if I withdrawed it at 3:27pm?

    • First Quarter Finance logo
First Quarter Finance | Sarah Quinn

      Raf,

Yes, you can withdraw money from your Green Dot ATM card more than once in the same day, so the midnight deadline wouldn’t really make any difference. If you’re referring to the maximum amount you can withdraw in one day (and wondering if the clock resets at midnight), then yes, you can withdraw more money after midnight even if you have already withdrawn the maximum of $400 the previous afternoon. I hope this helps!

      Hi Derrick,

According to the Green Dot website, the maximum withdrawal is $400. If your available balance is higher than that and you want to withdraw all of it at once, you’ll need to contact Green Dot customer support at 1-866-795-7597 to raise the withdrawal limit. Then you can use the MoneyPass ATM locator to find the nearest no-surcharge ATM where you can make the withdrawal. I hope this helps!

        Latrivia,

It depends on how much money is left on your Green Dot card.

How much money per day can i withdraw from a bank teller using my card?

How many transations does this take?

How many transactions can i make per bank in one day?

    • First Quarter Finance logo
First Quarter Finance | Hillary M. Miller

      Hi Lawrence,

According to the Green Dot website, you can withdraw $400 per day from a bank teller with a Green Dot card. You should be able to do this in a single transaction. There is no standard maximum for the number of bank transactions you can make with a particular bank in a single day, although individual banks may have specific policies about transaction limits. I hope this helps!
