Does CarMax Buy Old Cars?

CarMax will buy older vehicles. In fact, the CarMax website states it will “buy any car.” CarMax does not exclude cars based on mileage or the age of the vehicle, according to a corporate customer service representative and several CarMax sales associates in New York and Maryland. Virtually all cars will be accepted for an appraisal, but, keep in mind, factors like mileage and age may reduce the price CarMax will pay for the vehicle. You do not need to worry about the drivability of your car — CarMax typically sells cars that are extremely old or that have severe damage at auctions instead of to individual customers.

CarMax appraisals are free and the process takes about 30 minutes, a CarMax corporate customer service representative said. The representative advised that while most CarMax locations take walk-in appraisals, it is best to contact your local CarMax ahead of time and make an appointment. You can also schedule an appointment online.

Before your appraisal appointment, keep the following in mind:

  • Bring the car title or valid payoff documentation; all titleholders must be present for the appraisal
  • You’ll also need to provide current and valid registration documents
  • Don’t forget all car keys and/or remotes
  • Bring your driver’s license or a valid, state-issued photo ID
