Short Answer

Shell stations accept EBT, but only for food purchases in the convenience store — not gasoline or other non-food products. For more details on using EBT at Shell, see below.

Does Shell Take EBT?

Shell accepts EBT in its gas station convenience stores; we confirmed this information with customer service representatives in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin, and by checking the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) store locator.

Note that truck stops with Shell fuel may not accept EBT. While Shell provides gas at these locations, their connected convenience stores may not be operated by Shell, and may or may not have applied for SNAP program approval.

EBT-Eligible Items

SNAP benefits are designed to help low-income families and individuals receive proper nutrition. You can use your SNAP EBT card to buy non-prepared food items from any brand, including bread, cereal, dairy products, cold beverages, snacks, and meat. You cannot use your EBT card to purchase fuel, alcohol, tobacco, hot food or drinks, or things like household cleaning supplies. See our full list of what you can and cannot buy with EBT.

If you need to buy any EBT-ineligible items at Shell, you can use your EBT card to pay for eligible items first, then pay for the remainder of your order with any of Shell’s acceptable payment methods. Payment options include cash, credit, debit, or gift cards (as previously reported).
