I purchased gas at a Chevron Station last night for about $25.00. I used an American Express card. When I looked at my statement today the charge was for $100.00.
The station attendant said they put a hold on all credit cards at the pump; its standard procedure at all gas stations. IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE, EVER. I would like this investigated. It is a dirty trick. My credit card will be held for 3 days for $100.00.

Hello, Elizabeth. We’re sorry to hear about your frustration! Unfortunately, the gas station attendant you spoke with is correct — holds of up to $125 are common practice at gas stations when you use a debit or credit card. You can avoid holds in the future by paying in cash or using your debit card for a pin-based transaction. We have more information about this in our article on gas station hold amounts.
