Does Kmart Use TeleCheck?

Kmart does not use TeleCheck to verify and process personal checks, a Kmart customer service representative said. Kmart did previously hold a contract with TeleCheck, but as of this writing, the department store chain uses Certegy.

We spoke with store associates in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Washington to ask about the check verification process at Kmart. While not all store employees were familiar with the check verification process used by Kmart, those who were confirmed that Certegy was the company used.

How Does Check Verification Work?

Certegy is a check risk management company that helps retailers determine whether or not to accept a check, according to the company’s FAQs. When a vendor scans a check, the information is sent to Certegy. The company’s system runs various algorithms and creates a risk profile of the customer. Based on this profile, a customer’s check will be accepted or declined. Certegy does not publicize details on how this algorithm works to prevent fraudulent check writers from finding a way to bypass the system. However, the company says that this algorithm does not take credit score into account, but may attempt to verify the funds in your bank account.
