Short Answer

Wells Fargo account holders can cash checks up to $10,000 with no fees, though exact policies can vary by location. For non-account holders, the check cashing limit is $2,500, and cashing a business or payroll check will come with a $7.50 fee. Both account holders and non-account holders will need to provide a valid ID to cash a check. For more about Wells Fargo’s check cashing policies, see below.

Wells Fargo Check Cashing Policies

With more than 8,500 full-service locations worldwide, there’s likely a Wells Fargo near you, and you can cash checks even if you don’t have an account at the bank. However, there are some policy differences for account holders and non-account holders.

Account Holders

Wells Fargo’s check cashing policy allows account holders to cash checks at any Wells Fargo banking location. Bring your check and a valid government-issued, photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.) with you to the bank.

When you visit your Wells Fargo local branch, you’ll need to endorse your check (by signing the back and writing your account number below) and show your ID to the teller.

Account holders can cash any type of check — cashiers checks, personal checks, business checks, insurance checks, etc.[1]

Wells Fargo does reserve the right to require that you deposit all or part of a check not drawn on a Wells Fargo account rather than cash it. This may be due to a lack of funds in your bank account to cover the cost of the check or because the teller views the check as “suspicious.” There isn’t any set criteria for what makes a check suspicious — the teller decides this on a case-by-case basis.[2]

Fees and Limits

There’s no fee for account holders to cash checks, and the limit for cashing a check is $10,000.[2] However, check cashing limits may vary by branch — you may be limited to the amount in your checking account, so the bank can recover the funds if the check bounces. Also, some branches keep less cash on hand, so they may set lower check cashing limits. You can contact your Wells Fargo branch to find out its specific check cashing limit.

Mobile Deposit

As a Wells Fargo account holder, you also have access to the bank’s mobile app, which allows you to deposit checks from your phone by taking pictures of the front and back of the check. Simply write “For Mobile Deposit at Wells Fargo Bank Only” below your endorsement signature. You can deposit most types of checks via the mobile app, but you cannot deposit money orders. There are no fees for mobile deposit, and the app will display your deposit limit when you enter the check amount. Barring any holds, your funds will be available the next day.[3]

Non-Account Holders

Wells Fargo’s check cashing policy limits non-account holders to cashing only checks drawn on a Wells Fargo account. As a non-account holder, you’ll need to show a government-issued, photo ID to cash a check at Wells Fargo. You may also be required to show a second form of ID, which can be anything with your name on it, such as a credit or debit card.[2]

Fees and Limits

Unlike account holders, non-account holders may have to pay a fee for check cashing. There are typically no fees to cash a personal check or cashier’s check, but Wells Fargo charges a $7.50 fee to cash business checks and payroll checks. To pay the fee, you can simply have the fee amount deducted from the check amount.[2]

The check cashing limit for non-account holders is $2,500, but individual branches have the authority to set lower limits.[2]
