Burrowing under couch cushions, sinking to the bottom of purses, and falling in between car seats — coins have a way of accumulating. In today’s largely cash-free society, spare change seems particularly useless. Coins are cumbersome and using large amounts of change to make purchases is just plain inconvenient.

Happily, you can transform pesky change into crisp paper money with the help of coin-counting machines. These handy machines can be found at certain banks, credit unions, and stores. Best of all, some of them are free to use!

We’ve included a comprehensive list of banks, credit unions, and businesses that offer free coin counting machines. So whether you’re wondering, “What banks have free coin counting machines?” or simply “Where are the free coin counting machines near me?” we have you covered.

The List of Banks That Offer Free Coin Counting Machines

Other Ways to Empty Your Coin Jar

You’ve probably spotted a green Coinstar machine in your local supermarket or big-box chain. For an 11.9% fee, these machines will count your coins and print a voucher, which you can bring to a cashier or customer service desk to redeem for cash. To give you an idea of what this service may cost you, 11.9% is $6 for every $50 in coins exchanged. You can avoid paying the fee if you redeem your coins as an e-gift card instead of cash, or opt to donate the money to a charity. eGift cards and donations are not available at all kiosks.

Some times, you have to roll your coins for banks to take them. Some times they’ll have coin wrappers available to use too, making this option almost as convenient as being able to count the coins without rolling.

To find out which banks will roll your coins, where to find Coinstar machines, and a few other tricks for emptying your coin jar, see our article Coin Counter Machines: 50+ Places That Have Them (Banks, Stores…).

In Summary

While most national banks don’t offer coin counting machines, you can still find them in many regional and local banks and credit unions. If you’re a bank customer, this service is often free. You can also exchange your coins for dollars using Coinstar kiosks at supermarkets and big-box stores around the country. Though Coinstar charges an 11.9% fee for this service, you can bypass this fee by electing to exchange your change for e-gift cards, store credit, or charitable donations.
