What to Know Before Cashing a Check

Types of Checks

There are several different types of checks, and not every check cashing business will be able to cash every type. It’s important to know what kind of check you have so you can figure out where you’ll be able to cash it. Here are all the types of checks you may encounter:

  • Personal checks: These are checks from personal bank accounts, handwritten, and made payable to another person or business. You may write a personal check to yourself and cash it (a “one-party” check) or you may receive a personal check payable to you from someone else (a “two-party” check). You can cash personal checks at a variety of places, as we’ve previously reported.
  • Payroll checks: These checks are what employees typically receive for wages, payable to you from the company. If you get a paper check from your job, this is a payroll check. Some payroll checks are handwritten, and when they are, fewer places will cash them. Even still, you can cash payroll checks at a variety of places.
  • Government checks: This category of checks includes disability checks, pension checks, Social Security checks, benefit checks, welfare checks, and any regular checks from the U.S. Treasury, the federal government, or a state government agency.
  • Tax refund checks: If you are eligible for a yearly tax refund, you may choose to receive a paper check in the mail. This includes refunds for both federal and state income taxes. You can cash tax refund checks at a variety of places.
  • Third-party checks: These checks are made payable to one person, who then signs over the check to another (third) person to cash. Third-party checks can be one of the most difficult types to cash, but there are some banks that accept third party checks.
  • Traveler’s checks: These specialized checks are issued by banks as a security measure for travelers who don’t want to carry large amounts of cash with them.
  • Insurance checks: You may receive an insurance check for any claim settled with your insurance company. Insurance checks may be received for auto insurance, home insurance, or any other type of insurance policy.
  • Rebate checks: A rebate check is issued by a manufacturer, usually for a mail-in rebate promotion where you can buy something in a store or online at full price, and then receive a partial or full rebate by mail. The rebate is sent in the form of a check.
  • Cashier’s checks: This type of check is a highly secured instrument drawn directly from the issuing bank, rather than a personal checking account. Cashier’s checks are usually high-dollar amounts for secure, big-item purchases or business-to-business sales. You can check out our list of places that cash cashier’s checks.
  • Teller’s check: Also known as a banker’s draft, this is a check given to a bank customer for remittance purposes.
  • Money orders: These are considered a type of secure check with prepaid funds, similar to a cashier’s check, but money orders are not guaranteed by banks and are typically for smaller amounts. You can cash money orders at a variety of places.

What You Need to Cash a Check

When you want to cash a check, you’ll usually need to bring the check and a valid form of identification. See our related research for accepted forms of ID and what else you need to cash a check, plus general information about how to cash a check.

If you can’t provide a government-issued photo ID, you won’t be able to cash a check. There are a few ways to get around this problem, and we discuss them in our research on how to cash a check without a bank account.

Check Cashing Fees

While there are some places that cash checks free of charge, such as certain banks and credit unions — particularly if you are an account holder at the institution — check cashing stores, grocery stores, and convenience stores usually do charge a fee for cashing checks.

Check cashing fees vary depending on the store’s policies, as well as other factors that may include the type of check being cashed and the amount of the check. The fee might be a set amount, such as $3 per check, or a percentage of the total check amount. Set fees are typically less than $10, and percentage fees are usually around 3% or less. However, you’ll want to note the fees before cashing your check, particularly if cashing a large check — 3% of a check worth $5,000, for example, would amount to a fee of $150.

Banks and Credit Unions

Some banks and credit unions will cash checks for non-customers, though most charge a fee for this service. Others will only cash checks for non-customers if the check is drawn on their bank, and may also charge fees for check cashing.

Check Cashing Stores

Check cashing stores will usually cash all or most types of checks, though there is always a fee involved. Typically, check cashing stores only provide fee information on an individual basis because their check cashing fees often vary depending on the exact check type and amount. It’s best to call a check cashing store ahead of time to find out how much it will cost to cash your particular check there.

If you have a check for a large amount or an unusual type of check, it’s a good idea to call ahead and verify that the place you plan to visit won’t have a problem cashing your check. No matter what type of check you are trying to cash or what area of the U.S. you are in, there should be a place near you where you can get your check cashed.
