When it comes to buying furniture, it can be challenging to find exactly what you’re looking for within a specific price range, especially if you are furnishing an entire home. Thankfully, there are multiple furniture stores — both online and brick-and-mortar — that provide financing options. With furniture financing, you don’t need to have the entire payment upfront. You can spread your payments out over several months using in-house financing plans or a store credit card.

Some stores also parter with Progressive Leasing or AcceptanceNow to offer lease-to-own programs. With these programs, the leasing company technically owns the item until you pay off the lease amount. One benefit of these programs is that they do not require a credit check, which is helpful for those with bad credit.

Other stores partner with the third-party company Affirm to offer financing approval for customers with bad credit. You must apply for Affirm separately, but you can typically do this right from a store’s checkout page, and approval is often instant. Since Affirm reports to credit bureaus, making on-time payments is a way to rebuild your credit.

Note, however, that furniture financing also comes with some disadvantages. While financing spreads payments out over several months, it also usually comes with high interest rates. This may cause you to ultimately pay more than the furniture would have cost if you purchased it outright. Although leasing programs do not charge interest, they do charge service fees that also amount to more than the original price.

Additionally, there are often hefty late fees for overdue or missed payments. Late fees or repossession of the furniture can negatively impact your credit score. Before financing furniture, be sure to have a clear understanding of the associated fees and interest so you can be sure that you can afford the total cost of your purchase.

What We Recommend

If you’re looking for a wide selection of discounted furniture and you don’t mind shopping online, consider financing through Wayfair. It offers a store credit card with an interest-free financing period, and it also offers financing through Affirm, which approves customers with poor credit.

If you prefer to shop at physical stores, consider Ashley HomeStore. It offers in-house financing plans for up to 60 months, and it also offers a Progressive Leasing program with no credit check required for those with poor credit. Both Wayfair and Ashley HomeStore offer interest rates and fee structures that are comparable to their competitors.

In Summary

There are several different options when it comes to financing your furniture purchase. Offers available to you will depend on the store, how much you plan to spend, and whether or not you are approved for financing. Typically furniture stores will offer 0% financing for a certain length of time for those who qualify, which can help you save money on interest payments. For an online option with a wide variety of items and discounted prices, consider Wayfair — it offers financing through a store credit card or Affirm. Alternatively, Ashley HomeStore offers in-house financing options for up to 60 months as well as a Progressive Leasing program that requires no credit check. Regardless of where you choose to shop and finance, you’ll want to be sure to pay off the balance within the financing period to avoid paying the interest rates of around 30%.
