Stater Bros. sells MoneyGram money orders.[1] However, Stater Bros. locations generally do not cash money orders. We contacted several Stater Bros. locations in Southern California to confirm this information.

Money Order Purchase Fees and Limits

The fee for buying a money order at Stater Bros. is generally either $1 or $1.50 for every $500 you purchase.

The limit on the amount of the money order you purchase ranges from $500 to $3,000, depending on the location. All of the store locations we contacted said that money orders are only available in denominations of $500. However, at some locations, you can purchase up to $3,000 in money orders (six $500 money orders) per day at the store’s discretion.

Identification and Other Requirements

You can purchase a money order with either cash or a debit card. If you buy the money order with cash, then you generally do not need to show an ID. If you purchase the money order using a debit card, then you need to provide an ID, such as a driver’s license.

Cashing a Money Order

Almost all of the Stater Bros. locations we contacted said that they sell money orders via MoneyGram, but do not cash them. A customer service representative at one store said that it might be able to cash money orders that were purchased at that particular store.
